Kekoa Pest Control is based in Tempe, about 11 minutes and 5 miles from the middle of town, so this is the home county. It is also a great deal of ground: roughly 9,224 square miles and about 4.49 million people, spread across more than two dozen cities and towns and five Indian reservations. Pest control in Maricopa County comes down to which ground you live on and how far it sits from Tempe. East Valley work is routine. The far West Valley and the northern edge are a long drive for a one-person business, so call first and Kai will confirm what he can schedule.
Canal country, desert ranges and river corridors
The county splits into three kinds of ground, and each sets its own pest list.
The irrigated Valley floor. SRP's system delivers nearly 800,000 acre-feet of water a year, and about 20,000 Phoenix-area lots still take flood irrigation. Wet soil, shade and old citrus keep roaches, ants, crickets and roof rats close to the house. County guidance says rats take citrus as both food and water. Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert and central Phoenix sit on this ground.
The desert edge. The county's regional park system holds more than 120,000 acres of Sonoran Desert in 12 parks, among them White Tank Mountain, Estrella Mountain, McDowell Mountain and Usery Mountain. Homes along those boundaries meet bark scorpions and pack rats more often than lots deep in the street grid. Nobody treats that park land, so the pressure comes back.
River corridors and old farm ground. The Salt, Gila, Agua Fria and New rivers all cross the county, and a Flood Control District has existed here since 1959 because storm runoff has to go somewhere. Water left behind after monsoon storms feeds mosquitoes, and new subdivisions on former fields meet mice and crickets moving off the land.

What does Maricopa County Vector Control handle, and what stays with you?
The county's Environmental Services department runs a Vector Control Division. By its own description:
- Mosquito surveillance: year-round, with routine traps set weekly, reported at more than 800, plus extra traps after complaints. Culex mosquitoes are tested for West Nile and St. Louis encephalitis. Aedes aegypti are tested for chikungunya, dengue and Zika.
- Mosquito fish: Gambusia are free. Call the division to check availability.
- Feral bees and flies: complaints are investigated to identify the responsible party. For a swarm or colony, the county tells residents to call a pest control company, since it is not an emergency responder.
- Roof rats: same complaint route, with no bait stations or traps supplied. The county's FAQ says rats are being tested for tularemia, hantavirus and plague, with negative results so far.
Preventing mosquito breeding on your own lot is your job, and the Vector Control page says so directly. This matters in a bad season: in August 2026 Arizona led the nation in West Nile cases, with 58 human cases and 5 deaths reported in Maricopa County. Kai will tell you on the phone whether a mosquito job at your address is something he takes on.

Sun City, Anthem and other places with no city hall: who do you call?
Plenty of county residents have no city hall at all. Sun Lakes, Sun City, Sun City West, Anthem, New River, Rio Verde, Citrus Park and Wittmann are census-designated places. Mesa can list a city contact for bees in its water meters and parks. These communities cannot, so Environmental Services becomes the public contact.

Pest control in Maricopa County: questions
Does Kekoa really work across all of Maricopa County?
Kekoa works in the cities listed on this page, with the East Valley as everyday ground. Kai is one person, so a call from Wittmann, about 73 minutes out, is a different conversation from one in Guadalupe, about 13 minutes away. Call first. He will tell you plainly whether your address fits his schedule and how often he can realistically come.
Will the county remove a bee colony or roof rats for me?
No, not as a routine service. Vector Control investigates feral bee and roof rat complaints to work out the responsible party, and its page points residents with a swarm or colony to a pest control company. It does not provide roof rat bait stations or traps. A hive that threatens the public is a separate matter the county can act on.
I live in an unincorporated community. Who handles a pest problem there?
On your own lot, you do, with a private company if you want one. Places such as Sun City, Anthem and Sun Lakes have no city department to call, so the county's Environmental Services is the public contact for mosquito, bee and roof rat reports. Your HOA, if you have one, usually answers for its common ground.
How do I check a pest company before hiring one in the county?
Look the company up on the state's search page at opm.azda.gov/PCBusSearch.php. Arizona requires pest management businesses to hold a license from the Arizona Department of Agriculture Pest Management Division under A.A.C. R3-8-201. The rule is statewide, so the check works the same in Buckeye, Mesa or Cave Creek. Weed control has its own category, so confirm that too.
